L'Acadie Traffic Circle

For several years now the city of Montreal has wanted to redevelop the l’Acadie traffic circle. To this effect, the Dessau/SNC-Lavalin Consortium has carried out several potential geometric concepts meeting user safety standards and increasing traffic flow as well as the traffic circle’s capacity in general.

This arise out of Dessau’s project proposal for the redevelopment of Montreal’s Metropolitan expressway.

The road work included staging of highway 40’s service roads and of l’Acadie’s north and south access ramps, reconstruction of highway 40’s expressway as well as construction of a three level viaduct. This work began during the summer of 2001 and is to be completed by 2004.

Unique aspects

The new concept is an urban interchange with staging, replacing a ground level traffic circle with signal lights. This new interchange provides service to a high density residential sector and three commercial sectors.

This rehabilitation is based on a whole new concept, to be carried out in very little space, without possible expropriation and with a traffic flow of 130 000 AADT on the Metropolitan expressway and 80 000 on l’Acadie boulevard. Minimal traffic flow must be maintained during the work.

Services provided

  • Site investigations and condition surveys
  • Analysis of current conditions including traffic, safety, visual aspect, geometry, trucking, abutting owner accesses, public utilities, pedestrian and cyclist paths, etc. and identification of constraints
  • Preparation of different possible geometric concepts and evaluation of each one according to the following criteria: traffic flow and capacity, mass transit, pedestrian path and crossings, required land acquisitions
  • Validation and finalisation of optimal geometric concept
  • Coordination for public utility relocations
  • Work phasing and traffic management
  • Presentation to cities, citizens and elected officials
  • Finalisation of preliminary and final project proposal
  • Preparation of plans, specifications and construction cost estimates according to  work items (5 construction work items over 4 years)
  • Work supervision and technical support for design, phasing and traffic flow
