Study of a new Rail Line in Western Algeria

STUDY OF A NEW 220 KM HIGH-SPEED RAIL LINE IN WESTERN ALGERIA

The project aims to create a two-track 220 km High-speed Line (200 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight trains) in Western Algeria. This major project is part of the East-West Bypass Route (Annaba-Alger-Oran-Moroccan border) modernization program. The mountainous topography requires the construction of several engineering structures including 12 tunnels (total length 8 km), 99 road grade separations above the railway tracks and 64 railway bridges. Long range spans (up to 120m long) were recommended for viaducts on very high piles (up to 125m high) in order to reduce the number of intermediate piles. Alternative options using metal structures or corbelled pre-stressed concrete boxes were also studied.
