East-West Highway
Client
National Highway Agency (ANA), Algeria
Scope of Work
Management assistance for the construction of the East-West Highway.
Spanning 1,200 km, this six-lane highway includes five tunnels, 60 interchanges, and 390 civil engineering structures including 25 major viaducts, rest areas, truck stop service stations, and maintenance and operations control centres. Once complete, this highway became part of the Trans-Maghreb highway
linking all five North African nations. In addition to preparing tender documents and validating studies, Dessau helped the client manage the project and supervise construction work. We also transferred work methods and tools to the client’s teams.
Challenges
- Manage and oversee a $12-billion mega-project in only 40 months.
- Challenging environmental context as the highway runs through El Kala National Park, which is home to some of the country’s most precious wildlife.
- Particularly challenging topography and geology requiring the construction of tunnels through overlying strata.
