October 15, 2011 – Insider’s View on Consulting Engineering

On October 15, the Quebec Consulting-Engineers Association (AICQ) will invite the public to visit 17 of the province’s most innovative engineering structures in Montreal, Quebec City, Trois-Rivières and Saguenay.

Dessau is pleased to participate in this open house event by assisting with guided tours of two Montreal landmarks: the Bell Centre and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Bell Centre
With a total surface area of 18,500 m2, the Bell Centre is the biggest hockey arena in North America and one of the most technologically advanced and versatile concert venues in the world.

The tour begins in front of the Montreal Canadiens Hall of Fame. Visitors will be led down a hallway that tells the phase-by-phase story of the building’s construction. An engineer will be there to explain the technical work that went into this exceptional building. Next, the tour will progress through the public areas and rooms, as well as special areas that are normally off-limits, including the immense technical grid, press box and backstage areas.

Montreal Museum of Fine Arts
The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts’ Jean-Noël Desmarais Pavilion is known for its atrium, which is exceptionally bright thanks to its vast windows and skylights. This building earned an Honourable Mention from the Quebec Order of Architects in the “Institutional Architecture” category.

Visitors will be introduced to the immense inclined glass structure, which, at 24 metres, is truly an outstanding architectural feat. Many of the structural components were designed to be as small as possible, such as the lightweight stainless steel rods that are only 25 mm wide. The design for this windowed atrium is based on the glass pyramid at the Louvre in Paris. The Montreal museum also features an expansive underground gallery that runs under Sherbrooke Street. This space is 25 metres wide and connects the Jean-Noël Desmarais Pavilion to the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion.
