Dessau Wins Prestigious ASHRAE Award

Dessau, one of Canada’s largest engineering-construction firms, has earned a prestigious international award from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) in recognition of outstanding heating, ventilation and air conditioning system designs for hospitals. Specifically, Dessau was presented the 2011 ASHRAE Technology Award in the “Health Care Facilities” category for the expansion and renovation of Pierre-Boucher Hospital in Longueuil. The 2011 ASHRAE awards ceremony took place in Las Vegas from January 29 to February 2, 2011.

The project involved adding 9,940 m2 of floor space and redesigning an 8,360 m2 area including the operating section, labs, radiology, oncology, intensive care unit, cardiology, sterilization centre, day surgery, pneumology, hemodynamics centre, and other specialized clinics. The design included several energy saving measures, including heat wheels, a direct contact heat recovery unit, a high-efficiency chiller, variable frequency chilled water pumps, etc.

"This prestigious award recognizes Dessau internationally for our specialized expertise in hospital electromechanical design, centred on energy efficiency and sustainable development principles,” stated Jean-Pierre Sauriol, President and Chief Executive Officer at Dessau. “The last time an ASHRAE Award was presented in this category was in 2007 – and the recipient was also Dessau, for our work on Honoré-Mercier Hospital.”

The jury for this renowned engineering contest, comprised of building mechanical experts, evaluates the degree to which projects meet specific criteria such as: innovation in electromechanical systems, energy efficiency, air quality, ease of operation and maintenance, project value and profitability, and environmental impact.

Active in several countries, ASHRAE is a technical society with thousands of members worldwide. Its mission is to advance the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration, and other related technologies, such as building energy efficiency. ASHRAE’s technical committees establish standards that are used by building design experts around the world and that serve as the basis for the construction codes in numerous provinces and states. In fact, most regulatory material for buildings refers back to the standards published by ASHRAE.
