A major decontamination project for Environment
The Environment and Sustainable Development operating centre has just been awarded a major contract worth $2.6 million from Imperial Oil to treat the contaminated soils of the former unloading dock at the Montreal East refinery belonging to the Port of Montreal.
This project includes the bio-treatment of more than 4.4 million cu. ft. of contaminated soils through the bacterial decomposition of hydrocarbons as well as restoration of the site by reinserting the treated soils. This operation will enable the port authorities to use the site for other purposes.
The “Geo-Environment” and “Site Restoration” teams have already worked on this site in the first two phases of the project, i.e. evaluation of the environmental problems (Phase II studies) and the recovery of floating hydrocarbons flowing toward the river using a giant
suction head. This site is one of a thousand being restored for other purposes by Imperial. In 2003, 70 land lots in Canada were reconditioned and sold, and 16 rented lots were returned to their owners.
