Scope of Work

Engineering and construction management for the replacement and modernization of the Montreal Metro’s telecommunications systems and operational process controls (Réno-Systèmes program).

Modernizing the Montreal Metro’s telecommunications systems was a unique project with unprecedented technical complexities. Implemented over seven years, the project involved deploying new systems for data transmission, telephony, radio communications, video surveillance, telemetry, soundproofing, and signage along the 65-km existing network, which was inaugurated in 1966. In total, 1,200 cameras, 4,000 telephones, 4,000 speakers and 400 km of fibre optic cables were installed.

This modern infrastructure equipped the Montreal Transit Corporation (STM) for present and future communications needs.

Dessau has struck a unique partnership with the STM. Their exceptional knowledge of metro operations coupled with our telecommunications expertise has allowed the transit company to acquire robust, cutting-edge telecommunications infrastructure that is well suited to their specific needs.

Scope of Work

Mechanical and electrical engineering, IT technology, physical and computer system security.

Dessau’s multidisciplinary teams were awarded several contracts for the expansion and renovation of Sainte-Anne Hospital. We were responsible for redesigning and upgrading the hospital’s IT infrastructure to include new users: patient rooms, control centres and administrative offices.

Dessau also designed and supervised the mechanical and electrical works for the construction of a new 130-bed building, the complete renovation of a 10-storey (330-bed) building, and the construction of a new thermal power station and electrical substation.

Scope of Work

Design new telecommunications infrastructure and modify existing structures.

Over the last 16 years, Dessau has provided engineering services for structures, foundations, antenna-support structures and accessories for more than a thousand telecommunications towers, including freestanding or guyed towers, tubular pylons and roof-mounted structures.

We have also provided the following services: installation statements, complete analyses of structural elements, jobsite and factory supervision, post-construction inspections and structural maintenance.

Telecommunications Systems Repair for Hydro-Québec Montreal

Wireless Communications and Technology Integration for the Montreal Police Montreal

Client

Scope of Work

Revise the AMT’s entire telecommunications architecture to accomodate growing public transportation needs.

Dessau proposed a new approach to satisfy priority video surveillance needs with several thousand cameras installed in the stations (of which there are more than 90) in the Greater Montreal Area.

Dessau analyzed and revised the architecture, provided cost estimates, prepared plans and specifications, assisted the client during the tender process, supervised the works and submitted test and facility conformity reports.

Challenges

Produce the architecture and performance specifications (based on the use of fibre optics) and a secure IP network without excluding other technological solutions.
Estimate project costs to help the client execute the project within budget.
Analyze an alternative solution that proposed a cellular network for AMT information distribution.

Scope of Work

Studies, design and supervision of works related to telephone and computer systems, security, and systems supervision.

For more than 20 years, Dessau has received major Hydro-Québec contracts related to telephone, computer, systems supervision and security requirements. We played an active role in the modernization and repair of their telecommunications and automation systems for several hydroelectric

stations as well as inter-site connectivity. Dessau also designed an automation network using fibre optic cables to operate the underground electrical network in the Montreal region.

Scope of Work

Design and upgrade communications systems.

Increasing urbanization presents a challenge for public security agencies. Demographic change, protests, festivals – these are just a few of the situations that the Montreal Police have to face on a regular basis.

Using a systems engineering approach and drawing on expertise from several different disciplines, Dessau helped the police force upgrade its communications systems, which include a large number of images captured in real time.

From setting up a multi-screen display to modernizing the voice communications systems, Dessau competently applied its expertise in mission-critical systems design to the city’s police operations on several occasions.

Intruder Detection by Image Analysis Montreal

Scope of Work

Engineering, procurement and construction management for the modernization of the Montreal Metro’s centralized control systems (Réno-Systèmes program).

The Montreal Metro’s control centre manages all four of the city’s metro lines. This complex environment, which includes 150,000 entry and exit points controlled by telematics, allows for the integrated management of multiple functions, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The centre oversees several different systems (train and equipment power supply, ventilation, ticketing, fire detection, etc.), while managing radio communications, passenger information, signage and emergency responses.

Challenges

Work in a multi-project context respecting specifications for more than 40 interfaces and their related systems.
Establish the cutover process to upgrade to the new centralized control system that prevents disruptions to the operations.

Scope of Work

Engineering for the provision and installation of an intruder detection system that uses image analysis.

Dessau was contracted to set up an image analysis system that detects intruders in the metro tunnels. With 260 cameras, the system required the integration of

new servers in all metro stations. Dessau prepared the tender specifications and oversaw the subsequent works.

Adjust system sensitivity to prevent false alarms.
Integrate the intruder detection system with the existing video surveillance system.
Carry out tests while the metro was operational.

Scope of Work

Management of information technology security (MITS) verification.

Canada’s National Research Council considers information security to be its second most important risk factor. In light of this, Dessau was proud to carry out an audit of the management of information technology security (MITS) and verify its conformity with the standards established by the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat. The objective was to minimize potential threats to the security of information managed by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC).

Dessau assessed system vulnerability and potential risks in addition to physical security and site performance components. The mandate also included evaluating the safety of personnel, their awareness and training, and the process for obtaining their professional certifications. We also developed a system for periodic audits and produced training material.

Intelligent Transportation System Upgrades Laval

Scope of Work

Studies, engineering and assistance for the implementation of a bus network operations assistance system.

The Laval Transit Authority (Société de transport de Laval) retained Dessau’s services to assist with the implementation of an operations assistance system that would make network operations more efficient and improve customer service. Dessau’s multidisciplinary teams participated in the design, project management, procurement support and supervision of works to upgrade the onboard telecommunications system.

We also helped implement the real-time operations assistance system. The benefits of these systems include automated vehicle location, computer-assisted dispatching, real-time schedule adherence monitoring, management of voice and text-based communications, real-time communication with clients and the analysis and processing of operational data.
