Scope of Work

Project and construction management for the construction of a water sports and gymnastics complex.

With a total area of 128,000 sq. ft., the complex includes a 164-ft. Olympic-size pool, a family pool with water games, and a 17,000-sq. ft. gymnastics facility with a height of 32.8 feet. The building and its mechanical and electrical systems are highly energy-efficient.

To ensure maximum energy efficiency, Dessau opted for renewable energy sources, including a heat recovery and dehumidification system. This technology captures air over the pools, dries it, and uses the warm air to heat the water.

Challenges

Perform work in unfavourable geotechnical conditions (high water table, presence of iron ochre).
Design and set up a fall-prevention system around the swimming pool to ensure worker safety during construction.

Scope of Work

Urban planning study, environmental study, design, procurement, materials quality control and construction management.

The project entailed the construction of a new 600-unit residential development (all infrastructure and facilities) on the banks of Rivière des Prairies. Dessau’s multidisciplinary teams performed work upstream, making it possible to maximize the site’s full potential.

The project won the Residential Development of the Year Award from the Quebec Homebuilders’ Association (Association provinciale des constructeurs d’habitations du Québec).

Challenges

Design and build large-scale infrastructure while protecting the existing floodplain and waterway.
Integrate mitigation measures into floodplains.
Rehabilitate a 656-ft. portion of the waterway and stabilize the riverbanks.

Scope of Work

Turnkey project with financing

This 129,000-sq. ft. project comprises the complete renovation of a former military building, complete with required facilities. The project includes a 300-seat council chamber, a 200-seat cafeteria and underground parking.

A focus on energy efficiency resulted in a 25% reduction in energy consumption compared to the Model National Energy Code.

Scope of Work

Engineering, procurement, construction management.

The City of Montreal launched a major modernization and standards-compliance upgrade program for its water infrastructure – a colossal project that will take more than a decade to complete. After Dessau’s professionals conducted a number of studies, the City decided to make the Atwater, Charles-J Des Baillets and Pierrefonds water treatment plants their top priorities.

These two plants are among the largest in North America, with a combined daily output of 88 million cu. ft. of potable water.
Dessau is providing the preliminary studies, plans and specifications, project management, procurement, construction management, supervision and commissioning services.

Challenges

Maintain water production during works.
Offer a selection of technical solutions, taking into account construction and operation costs, as well as the cost of implementaing the solution in an operational plant.

Saint-Jérôme Municipal Government, Saint-Jérôme, Canada

Scope of Work

Establish a maintenance-management system for 460 km of pavement, sewers and water mains for the entire municipality.

Dessau used state-of-the-art technology, including video capture (with geographical metadata) and geomatic integration to carry out studies on the Town of Saint-Jérôme's assets.

We determined the maintenance needs for all streets and assisted with the creation a 10-year master action plan, helping safeguard the municipality’s investments.

Produce a comprehensive inventory of the road network.
Model the road network’s future behaviour based on survey data (simulations covering several years).

Montreal Metropolitan Community (CMM), Montreal, Canada

Scope of Work

Preparation of a waste-management plan.

Dessau assisted CMM with the preparation of a waste-management plan to recover at least 65% of economically viable residual materials annually (glass, metals, plastics, tires, etc.). Dessau led a study including the preparation of a comprehensive report on residual materials management, analysis and assessment of the situation, a public survey, and a study on the financing of residual materials management services.

Dessau used geomatics to produce thematic maps indicating residual materials management facilities, reclamation rates by area, and origin-destination routes for the materials in question. Dessau’s team of professionals also developed and analyzed several possible scenarios for the achievement of the policy’s goals, and recommended appropriate courses of action.

Expansion of Water Mains System Shannon

Wireless Communications and Technology Integration for the Montreal Police Montreal

Client

Shannon Municipal Government, Shannon, Canada

Scope of Work

Engineering, environmental studies, construction management and supervision for the construction of 30 km of water mains.

Dessau was contracted to work with local partners to implement an action plan designed to extend the existing network of water mains from CFB Valcartier to the Municipality of Shannon, and subsequently extend the water mains for the purpose of securing a new source of potable water for the municipality. This was deemed necessary following a trichloroethylene contamination problem.

Work included street resurfacing, surface drainage and all related work. Among other things, the construction of this infrastructure required three water-meter stations, a booster station and a chlorination station. Dessau also balanced the water system and performed technical monitoring of water quality.

Challenges

Secure the numerous environmental permits required.
Conduct a comprehensive search for a reliable new source of water.
Meet tight construction deadlines so as to provide the population with a supply of drinking water as quickly as possible.

Établissement Publique pour l’Aménagement de l’Agglomération Nouvelle de Sidi Abdellah (EPA-ANSA), Algeria and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Algeria

Scope of Work

Environmental, social and economic impact studies related to infrastructure work in the new city.

Located on the outskirts of Algiers, Sidi Abdellah must be ready to house 180,000 people by 2020. The city will have 30,000 housing units in 23 residential neighbourhoods along with four mixed-use neighbourhoods. Dessau’s mandate also included designing methods of installing infrastructure within the

site, establishing communications with nearby rural populations, providing environmental training for staff at EPA-ANSA (the local agency in charge of building the new city), and leading workshops on the development of mixed industrial districts.

Scope of Work

Design and upgrade communications systems.

Increasing urbanization presents a challenge for public security agencies. Demographic change, protests, festivals – these are just a few of the situations that the Montreal Police have to face on a regular basis.

Using a systems engineering approach and drawing on expertise from several different disciplines, Dessau helped the police force upgrade its communications systems, which include a large number of images captured in real time.

From setting up a multi-screen display to modernizing the voice communications systems, Dessau competently applied its expertise in mission-critical systems design to the city’s police operations on several occasions.
