Dessau has spent several years working on Peru’s Electric Frontier Expansion Project, which will distribute power to the country’s rural areas. The first phase of the project consisted of building 60-kV transmission

lines, a 138-kV substation in Cachimayo, a 220-kV substation in Carhuaquero and several other 60-kV substations. Dessau experts are presently working on two other similar projects in Peru.

Challenges

Planning and logistics for maintaining communications between various project sites throughout the country.
Developing an integrated and computerized management system for optimal document management and project resource monitoring.

Scope of Work

Multidisciplinary engineering contracts for designs, studies and supervision.

Dessau’s services were retained on several occasions by private producers to produce studies and engineering designs for wind farms. This included all aspects of wind farm design, from turbine balance of plant to the point of common coupling for high-voltage transmission networks.

Assist the owner with utilities requirements, protection studies, harmonic studies, geotechnical studies, environmental impact assessments, etc.
Design collector stations, conduct MALT studies (grounding), insulation coordination studies (if required) and produce substation equipment technical specifications
Provide detailed designs of medium-voltage collector systems

Challenges

Integrate the wind farm into the high-voltage transmission network.
Assist clients in dealing with utilities requirements.
Optimize the design of the medium-voltage collector system network linking the turbine balance of plant to the medium-voltage/high-voltage collector station.
Design grounding of the turbines and related equipment, as well as grounding of the medium-voltage/high-voltage collector station.

Hydro-Québec, Northern Canada

Scope of Work

Several mandates for the design and supervision of works related to mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and control, telecommunications and environmental assessments.

The Toulnustouc hydroelectric project included a 526-MW power station, a dam, a 9.8-km headrace tunnel, and a spillway with two heated straight gates. Dessau specialists participated in the pre-project phases, the preparation of plans and specifications, the follow-up on submissions and the design, as well as the

manufacturing and installation of all the station’s systems, electrical equipment and mechanical equipment. To protect the area’s wildlife, we ensured that the river’s water levels were sufficient for fish to spawn. Wastewater treatment systems were also installed in the generating station.

Producing 3D models of the station (a first in the industry).

Scope of Work

Design and supervision of electrical works for the 180-MW thermal power plant.

Dessau was contracted to provide knowledge and expertise for the construction and expansion of the Campanario simple-cycle thermal power plant in Chile. This project included a link to the interconnected central system by means of a 2.5-km, 154-kV transmission line.

With a total generating capacity of 180 MW, the station helps serve the country’s growing energy needs. Featuring leading-edge technology, the plant meets the highest environmental standards.

Scope of Work

Several construction and repair projects.

Dessau is proud of the close working relationship we have forged and maintained with Hydro-Québec over several decades. We’ve worked with them to build all kinds of hydroelectric stations, ranging from 5 MW to more than 1,000 MW. Most notably, Dessau participated in the construction of two new stations,

Rapide-des-Cœurs and Chute Allard, with at total power of 138 MW. Dessau also contributed to the repair of the following stations: La Tuque (220 MW), Bersimis (1125 MW), LG-3 (2418 MW) and LG-4 (2479 MW).

Challenges

First-time use of inflatable gates at the Rapide-des-Cœurs and Chute Allard stations.
Modify the diameter of the alternator during the design phase without altering the initial dimensions of the station.
Produce the engineering for two stations simultaneously in an extremely tight timeframe.

Scope of Work

Several mandates for the 675-MW generating station, including mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and control, site security and quality control.

The Gentilly-2 nuclear power plant has been in operation since 1983. Dessau obtained several major contracts to repair and upgrade the station. Most notably, we were contracted to design and set up

a new chemical laboratory, a fuelling machine maintenance shop, a site to store irradiated fuel (CANSTOR) and a heavy water leak detection and monitoring system.

Scope of Work

Engineering and work supervision.

Dessau was awarded an engineering, procurement and technical support contract for procurement and installation works required for this project to add a 450-MVA transformer, which included bus bars, isolation switches and circuit breakers. Auxiliary services and the 129-V DC storage batteries were replaced,

as was the guard for a transformer and 315-kV lines. A 120-kV guard was also replaced. Added features included a transformer and guard, automatic controls for the 120 and 315-kV yards, a new 315/120-kV transformer and equipment for the 315-kV yard.

Challenges

Produce and carry out the detailed engineering within a short timeframe.
Ensure that the station’s operations remained uninterrupted during the works.

Energía Austral (subsidiary of Xstrata), Santiago, Chile

Scope of Work

Engineering for 1,100-MW stations and 400-kV DC transmission lines.

Dessau was contracted to provide engineering services for the construction of the Rio Cuervo, Rio Blanco and Lago Condo hydropower stations near Puerto Aysen, some 2,000 kilometres south of Santiago. Combined, these three stations produce 1,100 MW. Dessau also participated in the

feasibility study for the 400-kV direct-current transmission line spanning 760 kilometres and linking the stations to the central interconnected grid. This system serves 90% of the Chilean population.

Challenges

Adjust to difficult geographic working conditions characterized by frequent and heavy rainfall, dense vegetation, isolation and a lack of roads leading to sites.
Conduct intensive field studies (laser topography, geotechnical drilling, seismic profiles, etc.) to gather information needed for the design.
Propose and implement measures to minimize environmental impacts and improve design’s safety and reliability.

Manitoba Hydro, Winnipeg, Canada

Scope of Work

Quality control of materials and equipment.

The Wuskwatim hydroelectric project is located in the heart of Manitoba. LVM, a Dessau subsidiary, was awarded a contract for the quality control of the materials. Most notably, the LVM team oversaw the installation of 4 million cu. ft.of cement concrete during

the construction of the 200 MW station and spillway. LVM is also supervising the production of three groups of turbine-alternators, as well as providing inspections and quality control in Chinese and Brazilian factories.

Challenges

Supervise the continuous pour of the concrete.
Control the temperature of the fresh concrete during the summer and monitor its internal and external temperatures.
Establish effective communications between Canada and Asia.
